  • Race Day

Today Veronica ran in her first cross country event.  She runs on team Rain City Flyers.  The meet is listed on their website under Meet Schedule.  Results are listed for today's event.

Veronica and best friend Emma are strategizing.
The sub bantam groups (age 6-8) get a hare.  The job appears to be a sought after gig.  A teenager gets the lucky task and has a blast.  At the finish line the hare moves aside to let the lead runner take the tape.
Veronica begins her first race.  The Rain City Flyers are in white and grouped on our left.  This is one of the largest turn-outs the Flyers has ever had.  The course director goes over the starting procedures.  He ensures all new runners are comfortable and know how the event will be run.
These two pictures above show Veronica on the same part of the course for each of two laps.  Her total distance is 3,000 meters and she maintained about 16th place throughout the race.
Dad could never miss the finish line.  Go Veronica!
The officials post the times for all to see.  Watch the Flyers website for official results.
Here is a video of Veronica finishing, in her bright pink running shoes, right behind her friend Emma.
Later the same day, we headed to Carroll and Carol-Ann Goering's (Judy's uncle & aunt) for an apple pressing party. Here Étienne and Carl are adding apples to the shredder. Judy is using the Safety Stick to make sure all the apples go through.
Watch the press in action! Uncle Carroll slides the basket of shredded apples forward, and Carl starts operating the press.
We drank all the cider we wanted at the party, and brought three gallons home (two of which we're planning to take to church tomorrow for the coffee hour.) Happy Pacific Northwest Autumn!

  • So proud of Roni! The longest distance I have ever run without stopping was maybe 440 yards, and I was 13. I didn't understand the purpose of training so I pretty much didn't run except at the meets, so I was slow and hated it. So I am impressed with Roni's determination and discipline!

I noticed a girl in the group named Étienne. Crazy Canadians, I am sure. Imagine if she married your little Frenchman. I suppose that is like Carroll & Carol-Ann.

Loved the videos. Everyone looks great.
